A three-stringed harp of the Malinke people, this was known
as a war drum because it lead soldiers into battle and its gourd resonator was played as a
drum. The strings can be plucked as well.
More rustic than the kora, the bolon is a large
harp-lute with three or four strings tied by leather thongs to a curved
neck. Its sound box is made from a large calabash covered by laced
goatskin. This instrument belongs to the professional musicians of the
Mandinka people, it could be played in instrumental pieces or to accompany
singing. |
