Djembe is one of the most powerful African drums.  It originates  from the Malinke people who live primarily in Guinea and Mali in West Africa. The Djembe is the drum of the Mandinka people, dating back to the great Mali empire of the 12th century. Used in social festivities, this single-headed, goblet-shaped drum is probably the best known African drum. The body is carved from a hollowed trunk, the head from goatskin that is laced over the drum. Two metal sheets with iron rings can be added as resonators and give a special "colour" to the sound. Jembe belong to the Manding (Mandinka, Bambara) ethnic group.

Because of the special sound of the tight, highly pitched goat skin, this drum has become very popular in the Western World.  Today, masters of the Djembe drum are found all over the world.  It has become a symbol of a new relationship between African and Western Culture.

A goblet shaped hand drum chiseled from a solid log, the Djembe is found in Senegal, Mali, Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast and Guinea.  It is traditionally played standing up with the drum between the legs and supported with a shoulder harness.

A sacred and versatile drum utilized in healing ceremonies, ancestor worship, rites of passage and warrior rituals as well as social dances.
